High performance tire comparison

While R-Comps may be the best tire choice for seasoned drivers participating in HPDE’s and lapping days they are often not the practical choice those getting started in the sport and those who drive to and from the track. Over the past few year tire manufacturers have come up with some great tires that offer a compromise between full fledged race tires and something that can be used every day.

Project Miata: The story

The story of my miata all starts in the late fall of 2008.  I had gone to the track with some friends to see what it was all about.  I was taken out for a ride and I was immediately hooked (after slamming my foot down on the imaginary passenger brake pedal a few times)!  I knew I had to build myself a track car.

I chose the miata for a few reasons.  I had always had a thing for the Mazda brand.  Being an RX-7 owner had a big part in choosing the Miata. I knew that the Miata would give a great driving experience like the RX-7. The fact that people considered the car a hairdressers car or a girls car really didn’t get to me that much.  I liked the idea that the car was RWD, lightweight, and very simple to work on.  It also helped that the car was overbuilt from the factory.

Le Cranky Mechanic: What do I take to the track?

What to bring to a track event?

So there you are in the garage wondering “What do I take to the track?” Oddly enough the first few things you should take to the track really aren’t for the car but rather yourself. You will need to stay hydrated. So bring lots of water and ice packs. If you have a couple of folding chairs toss them in the car as well. Although not necessary a tent to sit under or park the car under is always handy.I like to fit all the items I bring to the track with me in two large covered plastic containers. These containers can be had for about 15$.

Le Cranky Mechanic: Track tech tips

I’m often asked the question “How do I get my car ready for a track day?” I usually reply to the question in long ramble usually involving some story from yesteryear about how some poor fellow didn’t follow my advice and lost a wheel on his Audi A4 at Sanair… Oh yeah long ramble, sorry.

If you plan on attending a track day, HPDE or school it’s your responsibility as a participant to have a vehicle that is in proper mechanical condition. If you don’t you are putting yourself at risk and others around you, this equally applies to those attending the event. Imagine spending your hard earned money on a fun day at the track then have the car break down because of something that you could have prevented?
